How a passion for design and a lot of persistence turned a creative all-rounder into a qualified residential drafter.

Madelyn Douglas enrolled in the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting at BFDA with an  impressive design résumé.

With a background in interior and graphic design, and experience in the lighting and energy efficiency sectors, Madelyn had a creative eye and a growing interest in the technical side of design.

“I really developed a niche and a liking for drafting during my interior design course,” she recalls. “I enjoyed the technical aspect of it and felt ready for a new challenge.”

Designing a New Career Path

Madelyn’s story is one many creatives will relate to.

She wasn’t pivoting away from design she was evolving within it.

Each step of her career had nudged her closer to residential drafting, from understanding thermal performance to exploring technical plans in lighting design.

The drafting certificate became the bridge between where she’d been and where she wanted to go and as a result Madelyn is applying her skills daily in an interior design role that involves active drafting work a blend of her passions and technical training.

Her creative background is still central, but she’s added new tools to her belt.

“Everything I learned is still relevant,” she says of the course. “Even the units that were eventually removed when the course was updated I’m still using that knowledge.”

Balancing Work, Study, and Self-Motivation

Madelyn wasn’t a full-time student, far from it. Working full-time, and at one point even juggling two jobs, she needed a program that wouldn’t require her to give up work or compromise her financial stability.

Madelyn explained that she loved the nature of self-directed learning she says. “I could log in whenever I had the time evenings, weekends, whatever worked.”

But flexible study didn’t mean it was easy, the workload was heavy, and the challenges were real. Her secret to staying on track? Routine, mindset, and sheer perseverance.

“It would be so easy to stop. But I knew if I let that little voice say ‘skip it tonight’, I’d fall behind. I treated it like the gym: don’t think, just do it.”

Madelyn’s story is a powerful example of what’s possible when dedication meets a supportive learning model.

She used the tools available to her, Facebook groups for quick weekend help, responsive trainers for guidance, and internal motivation to push through fatigue and self-doubt.

Proof of Persistence

Now a proud graduate, Madelyn reflects on the value of finishing what she started.

“Having that certificate on your resume shows employers that you stuck with something. That matters.”

For working professionals considering a career change, creatives craving more technical skills, or self-starters looking for a flexible and effective learning experience.

Madelyn’s story proves it can be done and that BFDA’s drafting pathway works.
