A designer with a vision for growth
Kyle had already built a successful career in interior design, working on residential and commercial projects from concept through to completion. However, his growing interest in architecture and construction inspired him to study drafting.
“We used to outsource DA and CDC documentation,” Kyle explains. “I wanted to learn how to manage that in-house and understand the full process from start to finish.”
This motivation came from both professional ambition and the desire to future-proof his business. By learning how to prepare drawings for approvals himself, Kyle could offer clients a more complete service.
Learning that translates directly to real projects
From the beginning, Kyle found the course practical and relevant. Although he already had experience using Revit, the program challenged him to apply those skills from a construction perspective rather than an interior design view point.
He recalls that the site analysis and planning stages were the most challenging yet rewarding parts of his study. Understanding DCPs, LEPs, and submission requirements gave him the confidence to navigate the approvals process.
“I’ve already used what I learned to help a client with a concept design for a pre-approval meeting,” Kyle says. “It was great to be able to apply my knowledge straight away.”
Supported learning, flexible study
Like many working professionals, Kyle valued the flexibility of BFDA’s online drafting course. The ability to study at his own pace made it easier to balance full-time work and learning.
“I’m a big phone-caller,” he laughs. “Whenever I needed help, I’d call the office and always felt supported. The marking was quick, and the feedback was really clear.”
Kyle completed the course in just over a year by setting consistent goals, tackling assignments weekly, and managing his time effectively.
Looking ahead to building design
Kyle’s next step is the Diploma of Building Design, a natural progression for those who want to become licensed building designers. With new licensing requirements emerging in NSW, he’s eager to stay ahead of industry changes.
His advice for others considering study?
“Don’t hesitate. The course gave me a clearer understanding of how the construction and design worlds connect and it’s already helping me grow professionally.”
