Bridging the Gap, Gaining the CAD Skills Architecture Degrees Often Miss

Many architecture students graduate with strong design ideas but not always the technical drafting skills to bring those ideas to life. For Kumiko Black, this gap became clear during her university studies. While her architecture degree focused heavily on concepts and creativity, it offered very little hands-on training in CAD or documentation.

To succeed in the professional world, she knew she needed more than just design theory. That’s when she discovered the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting with Built Form Design Academy (BFDA) and it completely changed her direction.

“At university, they teach design concepts, but not drafting. Drafting is a special area, I believe.”

A Creative Career Before Drafting

Kumiko had always been creative. Before moving into architecture, she worked in fashion design in Japan and later explored computer graphics. Her foundation in design gave her a keen eye for aesthetics, but she recognised that professional drafting requires precision and software knowledge.

Her university experience inspired her to look for an education provider that could help her connect creativity with technical ability. BFDA’s online course offered exactly that comprehensive training in Revit, the drafting software widely used across the building design industry.

She explained:

“Both my work in fashion and my design study helped a lot when I studied residential drafting. They made my design skills increase, and that makes me really happy.”

Why Kumiko Chose BFDA

BFDA stood out because it offered flexible online learning and industry-relevant CAD training that could be applied immediately. Kumiko could continue her architecture studies while gaining hands-on experience in Revit and documentation skills that many employers expect, but universities rarely teach.

“Every year so many architecture students graduate from university, but the university is not really teaching drafting… This course gave me something they didn’t.”

The online format meant she could fit learning around her family life. Although she sometimes found it challenging to study alone, she valued that BFDA always provided real human support when she needed it.

“Your course is online, but you can call and talk to someone in business hours. That is a really good thing.”

Building Technical Confidence with Revit

One of Kumiko’s proudest moments was mastering Revit, a milestone that gave her the confidence to produce high-quality professional drawings.

“I felt confident about using Revit. It’s a big software, but once you know the skills you need, it makes you really confident.”

With every assignment, she saw her understanding deepen. What began as a supplement to her university studies became a turning point helping her feel ready to enter the industry with confidence and capability.

Inspiring Other Architecture Students to Take the Leap

Kumiko’s experience highlights a growing need among architecture and design students: the demand for real-world CAD and documentation training. Her journey shows that combining conceptual design knowledge with strong drafting skills doesn’t just improve employability it builds confidence and creativity.

Her story is especially relevant for:

Kumiko’s success proves that understanding design is only half the equation knowing how to draft and document your ideas is what turns creativity into a professional career.

Final Thoughts

By choosing BFDA, Kumiko bridged the gap between design theory and technical skill. Her story is a reminder that even the most creative thinkers benefit from learning the practical side of architecture. Whether you’re still studying, working in another creative field, or planning a career change, gaining CAD and drafting expertise could be the key to unlocking your next opportunity.
