A Creative Career That Led Back to Architecture
Merissa began her career studying architecture at Sydney University in the 1980s. Although she loved design, she stepped away from architecture for several decades while exploring creative fields including graphic design, set design, costume work, and calligraphy art.
However, she always felt a pull back toward the built environment. And while she understood design deeply, she recognised one major gap: CAD and BIM skills the essential tools for modern building design.
Because universities didn’t teach CAD when she studied, she needed a practical pathway to gain the technical abilities required to work confidently in today’s industry. That’s when a chance conversation introduced her to BFDA.
Why Merissa Chose BFDA
Merissa knew immediately that BFDA offered exactly what she needed. The course structure provided both hands-on drafting skills and an industry-aligned workflow the missing piece in her architecture degree.
Additionally, the flexibility of studying online meant she could keep learning even while juggling:
- supporting her two sons,
- caring for her mother,
- and continuing part-time work in a busy architecture practice.
Although balancing everything was challenging, the flexibility of BFDA allowed her to learn at her own pace. Even better, the personalised support meant she always had help when she needed it.
Learning CAD for Real-World Design
Throughout the course, Merissa discovered how to translate her creativity into precise technical drawings. She enjoyed learning how BIM connects architects, engineers and consultants, and she quickly began applying that knowledge to personal projects.
For example, she even started planning and drafting a potential home on her family’s farm. Because of this experience, she now feels confident taking on small client work and supporting architects with accurate documentation.
Furthermore, she now understands the design-to-documentation process, including:
- site plans,
- concept design,
- DA and CC documentation,
- detailed drawings, and
- working within ArchiCAD efficiently.
Why Her Story Inspires So Many Others
Merissa represents a growing group of students who:
- studied architecture years ago but never learned CAD,
- are returning to design after raising families,
- want a flexible and supportive learning environment,
- or simply need practical software skills to work in the modern industry.
Her experience is a powerful reminder that creativity and technical knowledge go hand in hand. When combined, they open doors to new work opportunities, new confidence, and new life directions.
Looking Ahead: A Future Built on New Skills
Although she is still balancing family responsibilities, Merissa is planning her next steps. She already has small drafting projects lined up and hopes to continue gaining experience within architecture offices. Eventually, she sees herself contributing more to residential design possibly even designing homes for clients or working alongside architects who value her creative background.
Most importantly, she now feels equipped with the skills, confidence and industry tools that were missing earlier in her career. For Merissa, BFDA wasn’t just a qualification; it was the missing link that allowed her to reconnect with her original passion.
Thinking About a Career in Residential Drafting?
If Merissa’s journey sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many of our students arrive at BFDA with strong creativity but limited software knowledge. Fortunately, the Cert IV in Residential Drafting gives you the practical skills and industry workflow you need to thrive whether you’re an aspiring building designer, former architecture student, or someone changing careers.
Gain the skills to produce detailed drawings, understand approval processes, and prepare for future opportunities in building design.
