A decision made early

Four weeks into an architecture degree, Daniel made a decision most students spend years avoiding. Faced with the reality of five years of study followed by further internship requirements, he took a moment to pause and reassesses his choices.

“It’s not that I didn’t like architecture,” he explains. “It just wasn’t what I was expecting. I realised it’s going to take years.”

Searching for a more aligned starting point

After stepping away from university, Daniel returned home and worked in hospitality while considering his next move. His intention was to stay within the design space but the pathway needed to feel more aligned with how he wanted to learn.

His search led him to the Cert IV in Residential Drafting with Built Form Design Academy, a drafting qualification online that offered a more direct and practical entry into the industry.

“I still wanted to stick with the same field,” he says. “That’s how I found BFDA and it just worked really well.”

Building technical capability through real projects

BFDA’s project-based approach whilst learning Archicad gave Daniel the skills required to produce detailed residential drawings while understanding how those drawings translate into built outcomes.

“I really liked the project-based work. especially Project B,” he says. “There was some creative freedom. You’re working with a set of plans, but how it comes together visually is up to you.”

Head of School Teresa reinforces that this approach is deliberate.

“Drafting is not just about drawing,” she explains. “It’s about understanding how buildings come together, how decisions are made, and how design translates into something buildable.”

For Daniel, this became particularly relevant after completing his course as he transitioned back into university study with a focus on town planning.

“It’s given me an understanding of how buildings actually get built,” he says. “When you’re working at a planning level, that can sometimes feel disconnected.”

The connection the Cert IV provided positioned him with a level of practical insight.

Confidence built through independent application

One example of his experience was recreating and redesigning residential plans for a family renovation, translating existing drawings into a digital model.

“It’s very different when you’re not following instructions,” he reflects. “You realise what you actually understand.”

That shift from guided learning to independent execution provided Daniel with a deeper level of confidence.

Perspective for Those Considering the Same Path

Reflecting on his journey, Daniel is clear about the value of his experience.

“Stick with it,” he says. “Even if your path changes, the skills are still valuable. You’ll use them in ways you don’t expect.”

His experience reinforces that building capability within the built environment is rarely linear, but the right foundation creates options.

The Cert IV in Residential Drafting establishes the tools, thinking, and industry awareness required to move forward with confidence within a building design career pathway.

For those looking to enter the building design industry with practical skills, technical understanding, and a real-world approach  BFDA is the place to start.

Designing the Next Step, Expanding a Career Beyond the Tools

Jordon’s transition into drafting did not begin with ambition alone, but with a moment of friction that exposed a clear limitation in how he was working. While attempting to produce hand-drawn plans for a family project, he found himself investing significant time for an outcome that lacked clarity.
