Brendan McNeill spent over 25 years as a plasterer working across domestic and commercial projects, running his own business, and navigating the physical demands of the trade. But like many in the construction industry, Brendan faced a moment where his body and aspirations called for a change. 

Despite having a Bachelor of Construction Management from RMIT, Brendan’s confidence with technology had eroded over time. Determined to future-proof his career, he enrolled in the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting at Built Form Design Academy (BFDA). 

Building Design Education from Regional Tasmania 

Living in a remote part of Tasmania, Brendan’s access to in-person training was limited. But BFDA’s flexible online learning environment gave him the tools and support to succeed in his own way.  

His dedication paid off. Today, Brendan not only holds a nationally recognised drafting qualification, but has also rebuilt his digital skills and opened the door to new professional opportunities. 

Leveraging Lifelong Experience with a New Skillset 

Brendan is now exploring multiple career paths from working with design-and-construct builders to contract administration and quantity surveying. His extensive industry knowledge, combined with his drafting and ArchiCAD training, positions him as an asset for any firm. 

He’s also proactively building an introductory portfolio and has connected with local professionals through the Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA), a testament to his commitment to networking and professional growth.
