Design Elements and Principles in Building Design

You will learn about the basic elements of design and principles of composition and how they can guide the design of building facades.

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to:

  • To understand what we classify ‘the elements of design’
  • To look at examples of the elements of design in nature and our built environment
  • To understand what we classify as the ‘principles of composition’
  • To look at examples in nature and our built environment of how the elements of design are utilised in the principles of composition
  • To explore the elements and principles in practical exercises.

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course you will have learnt:

  • How to identify the elements of design
  • How to undertake an analysis of images to identify how the elements of design have been utilised in the principles of composition

Colour Essentials - Getting White Right

Colour Essentials – Getting White Right

Getting an all white colour scheme to look right is more difficult than it looks. White spaces are often used to give a fresh modern look but can end up looking sterile and flat.

In this course we will undertake a visual survey of what constitutes a successful white scheme.

Course Aims:

  • The aim of this course is to:
  • Develop a basic understanding of colour and the attributes of white
  • Develop a basic understanding of the effect of interior lighting – both natural and artificial, on our perception of white
  • Look at some different examples of how to mix together different whites using decorative styles
  • Look at different white finishes – including paint finishes, hard materials and soft materials
  • Develop an understanding of creating a mood board
  • Develop an understanding of creating a sample board

Course Outcomes

At the end of this course you will have learnt:

  • Gained an understanding of the different ways we perceive white
  • Learnt to appreciate some differences between design styles
  • How to use white in an all white scheme, or with pops of colour
  • Begun experimenting with ways to communicate white schemes with suppliers and contractors – through the use of mood boards and sample boards
