Designing all while continuing to learn in a flexible, supportive environment.

For many students, the path from school to career can feel unclear. However, for Ellie who was home-schooled in a regional area the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting with BFDA opened the door to a creative and structured future. Now, Ellie has taken the next step and enrolled in our Diploma of Building Design, continuing her journey toward becoming a professional in the industry.

An Alternative to Traditional Study

After finishing Year 10 through home-schooling, Ellie needed a course that was flexible and practical. Since local TAFE options weren’t available, she and her family looked for something online. That’s how they discovered BFDA.

“Because of the location where we are, there was nowhere we could really go into a TAFE. So I needed something online and we saw you guys.”

As a result, she was able to study from home and still build real industry skills.

Turning Structure Into Creativity

Ellie wasn’t sure if she was creative enough for design. Nevertheless, she saw building design as a way to express her ideas while using logic and structure something that really appealed to her.

“I like doing creative things, but I’m not a creative person. This was a job where I thought I’d be able to create something in a structured, logical way.”

Therefore, BFDA became the perfect fit.

Support That Builds Confidence

One of Ellie’s favourite moments came in Course 5. Although she was nervous about having less guidance, she quickly realized just how much she had learned.

“I was surprised at how much I’d actually retained. I really enjoyed the process a lot more now that I knew everything.”

In addition, she credits much of her success to the support from BFDA’s educators especially Pablo, she explains that the support provided was always very easy to follow and understand.

Furthermore, she appreciated the clear structure of the learning platform and how easy it was to navigate.

Now Enrolled in the Diploma

Today, Ellie is officially enrolled in BFDA’s Diploma of Building Design. Thanks to recent government funding, she was able to begin this course fee-free, saving thousands.

“We were planning on doing the diploma in building… It’s good to know it’s fee free now.”

Ellie explained how she planned to access NSW government funding to support her education in Building Design

Compared to the Certificate IV, the diploma includes more complex projects, such as designing a double-storey home and a commercial building.

In other words, Ellie is now building advanced skills that will help her in the workforce.

Moreover, the diploma allows her to explore sustainability, business documentation, and custom design all while continuing to learn in a flexible, supportive environment.

Is This Path Right for You?

Ellie’s story is ideal for:
