How a Tradesman Turned His Passion for Design into a New Career
For many in the construction industry, the dream of moving from being ‘on the tools’ to a design-based role can feel out of reach. But for Jake Whyman, a former boilermaker and maintenance manager, the path to a career in residential drafting came unexpectedly—and it all started with a personal project.
Jake had always enjoyed experimenting with design software, but it wasn’t until he drafted plans for his own house that a professional opportunity presented itself. Impressed by his work, a local design firm offered him a job. There was just one catch—he needed formal qualifications. That’s when Jake found Built Form Design Academy (BFDA).
“I’ve always been interested in fiddling on the computer and drawing up things in the virtual world. When the opportunity came to do it professionally, I knew I had to take it,” Jake recalls.
Finding the Right Fit with BFDA
When researching his study options, Jake wanted a course that was specifically tailored to building design and recognized by the industry. After speaking with the Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA), he discovered that BFDA was a highly recommended pathway for certification.
BFDA’s online study format was a game-changer. As a father balancing work and family life, Jake needed flexibility. He was able to dedicate Wednesdays to his coursework, working through the materials at a time that suited his life and commitments.
“I just loved the flexibility of it. With two kids and limited time, being able to study when it suited me made all the difference,” he shares.
From Student to Professional Designer
Earning his Certificate IV in Residential Drafting didn’t just give Jake a qualification—it solidified his industry knowledge and helped him transition from a “student designer” to a recognized professional within his firm.
While his job title didn’t change immediately, Jake noticed a shift in his confidence and capabilities. His studies at BFDA aligned with his workplace experience, providing him with a deeper understanding of design principles and industry best practices.
Now, with his certification in hand, Jake is setting his sights on the future. Jake is now enrolled in the Diploma of Building Design with BFDA looking into further his qualifications and has even begun considering what it would take to run his own design business one day.
His story is proof that whether you’re a tradie looking to get off the tools or someone with a passion for design, a career in building design is within reach—especially with the right training.
