Wesley Richards: Preparing for the Future with Drafting and Design
After spending more than two decades in the construction industry, Wesley Richards knew his body wouldn’t keep up with the demands of hands-on trade work forever. A skilled plasterer and builder, he had dedicated his career to shaping homes, but as the years went by he realized it was time to start shaping his future, too.
Rather than walking away from an industry he loved, Wesley saw an opportunity—one that would allow him to stay involved in construction while future-proofing his career. His solution? Learning residential drafting through the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting at BFDA.
“I just feel like my body is slowing me down a bit, and I don’t think I’ll be able to keep up in the future. I want to prepare myself so I can stay in the industry without being on the tools full-time,” Wesley shared.
Blending Hands-On Experience with Design
Wesley’s vision wasn’t to leave the tools behind entirely, but rather to balance construction with design, offering both drafting and building services to his clients. This approach would not only allow him to gradually transition away from physically demanding work but also provide a more comprehensive service to homeowners.
“I’d like to design houses, decks—anything for customers—and also have the opportunity to build it for them. It lets me mix things up and, as I get older, slowly transition to just drafting.”
By enrolling in the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting, Wesley gained the technical skills needed to turn concepts into functional, council-approved designs. His experience as a tradesman gave him an edge—he already understood construction methods and practical design challenges. Now, with drafting skills, he could bridge the gap between concept and construction, making projects smoother for both himself and his future clients.
Preparing for Independence
Wesley took a strategic approach to his career transition. While completing his course, he took time off work to focus on learning, later returning to his previous employer to financially stabilize himself before launching his own business.
“I’m working for now, but next year I want to dive into drafting fully. I’d like to work with a company for a year or so to learn how they run things, and then go out on my own.”
This measured approach ensures that when he does step into business ownership, he’ll have both the confidence and experience to do it successfully.
The Power of Learning and Industry Connections
Beyond technical drafting skills, Wesley discovered the importance of industry connections and professional development. Encouraged to join the Building Designers Association of Australia (BDAA), he saw the value in networking with professionals who could offer guidance, support, and career opportunities.
“It’s great to have a network of people who’ve been through this transition or who are already doing what I want to do.”
His commitment to continuous learning doesn’t stop at the Certificate IV. With plans to eventually complete a Diploma in Building Design, Wesley is setting himself up for long-term success, expanding his knowledge, and preparing for future licensing opportunities.

With his skills, experience, and forward-thinking mindset, Wesley is not just working in construction—he’s shaping his future in it.
