Our pathway to enable you to become a practicing Building Designer has been designed to give you the best chance of getting into the industry with industry relevant skills as quickly as possible.

STEP 1. EARN YOUR CERT IV in RESIDENTIAL DRAFTING (CPP40121)

The Cert IV in Residential Drafting lays the foundation of your learning and gives you the skills you need to enter the industry as a draftsperson. Learning the technical skills of residential drafting upfront will give you the core skills you will need as a designer if you choose to continue onto the Diploma of Building Design.

YOU WILL DEVELOP THESE SKILLS:

• How to read typical drawings produced by designers and consultants for building projects
• How to apply Australian drafting conventions and standards to the production of building design drawings
• How to use one of the leading 3-D BIM capable software programs – either ArchiCAD OR Revit
• How you can apply file management processes to building design projects
• Standard Australian construction materials and construction systems and building services
• How to source information for building approvals processes with Local Government Authorities (LGAs)
• How to source information in the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standards (AS)
• Key architectural styles and movements and their relevance in Australian design

As a part of the course you will be creating drawing sets that can be used in a portfolio that you can show to potential employers and/or clients.

STEP 2. (OPTIONAL) BUILDING DESIGN DIPLOMA CPP50911

Want to continue your study and become a building designer?

The Diploma of Building Design builds on the skills you learned in the Cert IV in Residential Drafting (a prerequisite for the Building Design Diploma) and teaches you the skills required to design small scale buildings.

The success of our students who have undertaken this pathway is testament to our belief. Most graduates have gained employment in the industry, either before, or immediately after completion. And one of our diploma students has recently won awards for her first diploma project after completing the CPP40115 Cert IV in Building Design Drafting (now superseded by the CPP40121 Cert IV in Residential Drafting).

HOW LONG WILL THE COURSE TAKE?

All of our courses are delivered online via our online campus so there are no in-person classes that you need to attend.

The courses are designed for you to work through at your own pace to accommodate for students who are unable to study during traditional school and/or business hours. We do not set deadlines for your assessments but you will have an overall deadline for the completion of the course.

CERT IV TIMEFRAMES:

• Students who are studying full-time are expected to commit approx. 20hrs per week with an expected completion within 9 months.
• Students who are studying part-time are expected to commit approx. 10hrs per week with an expected completion within 18 months.

HOW WILL I BE SUPPORTED WITH MY LEARNING?

Online learning can open up a world of possibilities especially for those who are unable to attend in-person classes. However, we want to ensure that you still have the support you need as you study. We have a variety of support channels available to our students including:

• Educators who are available via phone from our head office Monday-Friday during business hours
• Dedicated private student Facebook groups where you can post questions to your fellow students and graduates
• One-on-one zoom sessions with an educator when additional help or tutorials are required
